Patchwork Quilting

quilting

Article by AJ Ross

Patchwork Quilting goes back many years. Examples of quilting have been found in tombs of Pharaohs dating back to 3400BC.

Joseph’s coat of many colors was probably patchwork. Even armor was made by quilting heavy fabrics together. Quilted bed covers were recorded in household inventories from the 17th century.

Patchwork quilting has even evolved into an art form known as art quilts. The Amish have developed the quilting traditions of other immigrants into America, into their own style.

Emigrants from Europe took their traditions of making quilts from scraps with them to America. Ideas, designs, and even fabrics were exchanged across the Atlantic. The Log Cabin Quilt Design that was originally known in Ireland as the Folded Quilt Design was a good way of using small scraps of fabric to create a very practical piece of art.

It is doubtful if women quilters viewed their creations as art, it is much more likely they were simply seen as a quilt to cover a bed and provide warmth, albeit still a beautiful item. Crazy quilts are made from randomly stitching together odd pieces of cloth.

In colonial times all cloth had to be shipped from Europe at great expense, so nothing could be wasted a patchwork quilt was never regarded as being finished until it had been quilted. Quilting combined the three layers of the quilt and the backing, the wadding and the pieced top together, so the woolen or cotton wadding would be held in place.

Quilting was a time consuming yet essential task as it provided a hard wearing warm durable quilt that had cost very little as it was made of the scraps from other projects.

Quilting is generally regarded as a female pastime since traditionally men did not learn to sew, while sewing was an essential skill for a young woman. Quilting was also a social pastime. Women would gather to piece the top together and while they worked, they would exchange gossip and tales. Sometimes after a quilting party, the men would join the women for supper and often romances would begin.

Lives are displayed in traditional patchwork quilts. Part of the dress of a dead child or part of a cherished Father’s shirt could be pieced in to allow the maker to hold her memories.

Quilts have been made over years, lifetimes, or even generations. Telling the tales of women’s lives though embroidery, color, and embellishment.

One group of special mention is the Amish, a religious group who migrated to America in the 1800′s. Quilting was not a skill they bought to America, but rather a skill they learnt from ex-English neighbors in their new land.

In Amish societies, a simple life is a core belief and continues to be today avoiding modern mechanization. While they do use a treadle-operated sewing machine to piece, their quilts together the quilting is always done by hand.

The Amish do not use patterned fabrics in their quilts; the piecing patterns they use readily distinguish Amish quilts from other varieties of patch working. The patterned fabrics are considered to worldly for use in a conservative Amish home. Some Amish quilts do not even use pieced tops; the only pattern is the intricate quilting designs. For an Amish woman an elaborately quilted design is not extra work but a creative outlet.

Traditionally Amish quilts were made from scraps left from clothes or recycled fabrics. This is another Amish value to waste as little as possible. Characteristically Amish quilts will have borders (usually at least one and usually two) added because they increase the size and frame the pieced design.

Borders are cut conservatively on the grain so as not to waste fabric. The inner border is cut from strips of cloth with a square in the corner to join it. Mitre corners or bias cut borders are rarely used as this wastes fabric. Often the quilts are bordered simply by cutting the backing larger, allowing it to be folded over.Amish quilts are very striking despite their simplicity. This is usually due to the colors used.

Although it is commonly believed that there are color restrictions in Amish quilts, this does not appear to be true. The only restriction is what is available to the quilter and the quilter’s own color sense.

Typically, an Amish quilt will feature two or three dominant colors with an accent color, e.g. Slate blue, black and deep mauve. White is not often used, as it is hard to keep clean.

For the wider quilting enthusiast population, quilting has evolved into more of an art form. While traditional patchwork relies on pattern and color to create an image. Art quilts (or watercolor quilts) are more like painting with fabric than traditional patchwork designs.

Art quilts range in size but generally, they are more often seen hanging on a wall rather than on a bed. There is no form of embellishment that is forbidden in Art Quilting, if you can imagine it, you can use it. Because of these rather vague boundaries, this is the perfect art form, for any creative fabric artist.

There are many groups for modern quilters to join and sell their works. The internet provides an excellent medium for groups to collaborate with each other to create a quilt together. Thanks to T.V. shows, Quilting is reaching a wider audience and is no longer viewed solely as a women’s pastime. Quilts and quilting have never been more popular.

A Homemade Baby Quilt – The Perfect Baby Shower Gift

The excited mother-to-be carefully unwraps each present, thanks the giver of each, and receives and expresses a kind sentiment of how the new baby may look or feel about the newest unwrapped baby shower gift.  The box next in the pile of presents to be unwrapped, not only draws special attention of the new mother-to-be, but the handmade baby quilt inside is passed around for all in the room to get a closer look and feel the soft baby flannel, comment on the unique handmade baby shower gift and the time and care that must have gone into creating such a beautiful and unique handmade baby quilt.   As you see the faces of those admiring your handiwork, you realize that the time you have invested sewing and quilting this unique handmade baby quilt, just for the new mother-to-be and her new baby, was worth every minute of the time you spent.

Time – what an interesting term to a quilter.  From the moment you draw your design idea, choose just the right fabrics, cut them apart and begin to sew those pieces back again into one special handmade baby quilt, it all takes time.  Many hours are spent in solitude, with just the hum of the sewing machine as your companion.  As the unique baby quilt takes shape, your time is spent cutting and sewing, and a bit of ripping, once in awhile.  When your sewing machine finally needs a rest, you’re ready to quilt.  The needles and thread are prepared, the quilt is stretched on the frame, and your hands mimic the machine as they go through the motions of hand quilting. This procedure is done by sewing the layers, (quilt top, batting, backing) together to produce the finished handmade baby quilt.  Finishing touches are completed with a binding that borders the perimeter of the quilt.  As your unique, handmade baby quilt has come to life, the quilter will lovingly attach a name to the creation.  Your time and talents have given birth to a new creation made of cloth and your hard work, and destined to spend its life, forever, with the baby, covered in its warmth.

Remember that shower gift that was given to the mother-to-be?  That little baby grew up?  Years later, of all of the wonderful and beautiful gifts that the new mother was given at the baby shower, which one would you still see in the nursery today?   The child may still be sleeping with that handmade baby quilt or it may be neatly folded at the foot of the bed.  Can you see that quilt being dragged around as you visualize the “little one” with his/ her thumb in his/her mouth.  Yes, the handmade baby quilt may be well worn, well loved, but a lasting keepsake.  This was one gift from that baby shower that was not outgrown or placed somewhere in the closest or drawer, with no unusable purpose.  Every minute you’ve spent stitching with love on that handmade baby quilt, added to the lasting keepsake for that special “little one.”

Take time to quilt.

Converting Needle Knit Patterns to Loom Knitting

knitting

Needle knitting alternates between the right side and the wrong side of the pattern facing the knitter. Circular knitting is the exception to this rule, therefore circular knitting patterns can be used just as they are for the round loom. Change nothing!  All other needle  knitting patterns will be converted. Please remember that we are converting for the loom, not the knitting board.  2

In needle knitting, the first row is usually a RS (right side) row, and the second row is the WS (wrong side) row. This leads to converting your patterns in the following manner.
If the first row is a RS row, convert as follows:  Leave all the odd rows as they are.   Change all the even number rows to the opposite stitch.   In other words, if they are knit, change them to purls; if they are purls, change them to knit. 3 If the first row is a WS row, convert as follows:
Change the odd rows.   Leave all even rows as they are. For patterns with charts, use the following instructions:

Flat panel patterns:
Read the chart starting at the bottom right of the first row.   Second row starts at the bottom left.

All odd rows start right to left.  All even rows start left to right.

Circular Knitting Patterns:

Read the chart starting at the bottom right and continue through pattern reading right to left for all rows. 5 To sum up, the first thing you need to do whenever converting a pattern is determine which row is RS and which is WS. Remember in needle knitting, unlike loom knitting, the piece is flipped after each row and the knitter switches back and forth between knitting on the RS and the WS of the piece.

Since loom knitting is always done on the RS of the piece, WS rows in a needle knitting pattern need to be converted. Converted meaning to use the opposite stitch from the way the needle pattern is written.

Usually, the even rows are WS but it is not always the case. When reading a pattern, the first row is usually marked as either RS or WS. So whichever way it is marked, the odd rows will all be one way and the even rows will all be the opposite.

Happy Loom Knitting!

How to Master Knitting Instructions the Easy Way

knitting

I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. All knitting instructions use basically two stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Once you know these two knitting essentials you will be able to follow most knitting instructions which are just combinations or variations of these two stitches.

Knitting Instructions for the Knit Stitch

Once you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Push the point of the right knitting needle in between the front of the first and second stitches, pointing the knitting needle to the right to feed the point through the first stitch keeping it under the left needle. The knitting yarn should be at the back of the work. Loop the knitting yarn around the right knitting needle from back to front, letting the knitting yarn rest between the needles. Catch the knitting yarn on the end on the right knitting needle and pull it through the first stitch to the front of the work. Slip the old stitch off the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right needle. Now you are getting the hang of the knitting instructions. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches, if they are all there, turn the right knitting needle around and put it in the left hand. This is the first row from your knitting instructions. The knitting yarn will look like it is at the front and you will now take it to the back and start the second row of transferring stitches to the empty right needle.

Knitting Instructions for the Purl Stitch

The Purl stitch will also be in any knitting instructions. Start with the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Your knitting yarn will be hanging in front. Push point of right knitting needle into the front of the first stitch from right to left. Wrap the knitting yarn around the tip of the right knitting needle, crossing over the two needles and hanging once again in front. Slide the right knitting needle down and back taking the new loop of knitting yarn from front to back, through the old stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left knitting needle. If you have followed the knitting instructions you now have a stitch in purl on the right knitting needle and the yarn is hanging, once again, in the front. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches to make sure you haven’t dropped any and turn the work around putting the knitting needle with the stitches on in your left hand to start the next row.

I hope you could follow my basic knitting instructions. I have a lot more information about knitting on my Knitting Instructions blog so please join me there to learn more.

Rachel John, Extreme Textiles, broke records by knitting with a 1000 strands simultaneously! This video shows the set up of the event and the event itself. This event took place at the Southhill Park Unravel Textiles exhibition in October 2006. – - – - – - – It is a challenge for all of us to take the waste products that our society produces and to put it to good use. This video was made in order to stimulate that process. The comments on this video have been an insight into how people view things when taken out of context. For instance – should I be knitting blankets for charity? I do much charitable work – I cannot increase the hours on this as I wouldn’t have time to earn the basics for living. I am happy if this stimulates others to find waste and turn it into blankets for needy. Especially as – using my tools – you can make blankets in a twentieth of the time it takes to make one in squares. If you feel there should be more knitting for charity, join your local group, set one up if there isn’t one, and see what you can achieve. You may find a whole new community that brings you joy and a feeling of worthiness. I am one person with the same number of hours in my day as you and they are pretty full already! No yarn was wasted in the making of this installation – the yarn will be put to good use when the piece has finished circulating as a 1st in the world example of taking multi strand to the limits. – - – - – Over half the yarn in the installation was deemed as waste

Where to Find Free Knitting Patterns Online

By Staysik

There are a whole lot of fabulous knitting patterns that are available for free online. It is sometimes hard to sort through the not-so-great patterns, but this article will give you some tips for finding that great pattern that you’re looking for.  Also, some of the websites, Ravelry for instance has made searching for a pattern so easy that you will just love it- but don’t stop at Ravelry- visit the other sites for their great patterns too!

Step1

Many yarn companies have free patterns on their websites- one really wonderful source of free knitting (and crochet) patterns is Berocco yarn’s pattern library.  Lion yarn also has a huge database of patterns, and Elann.com and Knitpicks.com are good sources as well. Others to try are Yarnia PDX, and DMC. You can do a search for “yarn companies” and many will have at least a few free patterns to choose from- some more than others.

Step2

Try websites like Cut Out + Keep, which have all sorts of crafts, along with knitting patterns but you can sort through their database of patterns very easily.  Also try Craftster, which is the same (many types of crafts, knitting included).  There’s a good community of crafters and knitters on both these sites, and they have great opportunities for networking and help, or tips when you need them, with some very impressive projects on display.

Step3

Ravelry has a fantastic catalog of patterns, many of them free (the patterns that are not are relatively inexpensive). Sign up with Ravelry and search for free patterns – you will find a wonderful resource on this website, with advanced searching features and fabulous patterns!  There’s no doubt that every knitter and crocheter finds Ravelry their go-to website and source for patterns and networking with others, it’s just a really well-designed site.  Ravelry has a lot of groups to join, with plenty of other knitters willing to help you when you have a problem with a pattern or just a question, and you can share your finished product as you are creating it with the various groups you’ve joined.

Step4

Look for forums and online magazines with free patterns- Anticraft is a good one, so is Craftster, Craft Magazine, Oh My Stars, Knitting Daily, and Knitting help.com all have really great patterns for free.

Step5

Another very fantastic source for finding online patterns for free is Knitty-an online magazine, which features very talented designers and you can check their archives for more patterns.  Many of the knitting magazines have some patterns that are only available online, so be sure to look into these for each issue, and they are free.  Knit1, Interweave Knits, Knitscene and Vogue Knitting all have really wonderful, high-quality, stylish patterns.

And check out the resources for some others, where you can find some great vintage patterns as well.  Try searching for “free vintage knit patterns” if you don’t find what your looking for in the resources.   But I’m sure that between all the links, magazines, webzines and links from the resource links, you will find so many free knitting patterns that you will have projects planned for the rest of your days!

Knitting With Alpaca

knitting

Hailing from South America, the alpaca belongs to the camelid family that also includes camels, llamas, guanacos and vicunas. They are a docile breed whose fleece spins into luxurious yarns. More than three quarters of the world’s alpaca population resides in Peru.1 In centuries past, the alpaca was an incredibly valuable animal, even more so than precious gems! Clothing created with alpaca was restricted for use by royalty. The alpaca has been domesticated and is treated as one of Peru’s national treasures. England has the double decker bus, the U.S. has Mt. Rushmore, and Peru has their alpacas. What a diverse definition of treasure!

Alpaca fleece is a “protein fiber”. This doesn’t mean knitting with it will make you stronger, it merely indicates that the fiber comes from an animal- namely, the alpaca. Alpaca fiber is strong, warm, and comfortable. Each fiber is hollow which makes it incredibly lightweight. Even the most delicate alpaca garments are warm for this reason. Perhaps alpaca’s greatest feature is that it can be worn next to the skin comfortably. The explanation for this is the behavior of the scales on the exterior of the fiber itself. They all lie flat in the same direction, making for a smooth surface. Less expensive than cashmere and with the strength of mohair, alpaca is highly desirable and functional. As with most natural fibers, alpaca needs to be handled with care when it comes to water exposure. Be sure to read and heed the washing instructions on your yarn or sweater.

While there are 2 breeds of alpaca, Huacaya and Suri, the former makes up a whopping 95% of the population.2 Differences between the two are numerous and as you may have guessed from the percentages, the Suri is harder to come by. Suri qualities include fleece that grows downward like human hair in wavy or curly locks with a silky texture. Huacaya fleece is coarser and grows straight outwards, at a right angle to the skin of the alpaca.

When alpaca fiber is processed, it is evaluated and sorted into one of several categories based on its micron count (in layman’s terms: the softness quotient). Micron count is a technical measurement determined by studying a sample of alpaca fleece and calculating the average diameter of the shaft of each fiber. Baby alpaca might have a micron count in the high teens whereas superfine alpaca would fall in the mid-twenties. The lower the number, the finer the fiber. *Please note that baby alpaca is a classification group, meaning it doesn’t always come from young alpacas. It merely refers to any fibers from an alpaca’s fleece that fall within said micron count. While fibers become coarser as an alpaca ages, it is possible for older alpacas to continue to produce fibers that fall in the baby alpaca micron count range.

If all of this jargon confuses you, then you might relate better to the methods used by Peruvian women who hand sort all of the fibers and determine their classification based on how they actually feel.3 The finest and softest feeling fibers are tagged as baby alpaca, and so on for fine and superfine yarns. Fiber from various parts of the animal can have different feels.

Knitted garments made of alpaca have some interesting properties. You should know that alpaca yarn is pretty stubborn when it comes to elasticity. It’s not that it won’t give, it actually has a tendency to be too generous. If you knit dense stitches and patterns or hang heavy embellishments on it, it will become distorted with no hopes of regaining its youthful figure. This is due to the aforementioned smoothness of the fibers. Since the scales lie flat in the same direction, the plies or strands of an alpaca yarn slide past each other instead of clinging and gravity can take its toll on the fabric. Gravity, as we know, can sometimes cause an undesirable elongating effect. So make those 100% alpaca projects light and airy, or use a blend for greater resilience and elasticity.

Speaking of which, all blends happen for a reason. There are ways to make alpaca yarn work for every project and that is by blending it with complimentary fibers. Blended yarns are not created arbitrarily. Wool, for instance, is a highly crimped fiber and therefore offers some elasticity. Since alpaca fibers contain only shallow waves, mixing in some wool makes an otherwise unyielding yarn a little more forgiving. Suri Dream is a hand knitting yarn innovation exclusive to Knit Picks. Imagine wearing a mohair sweater that wasn’t scratchy. Having trouble? By combining the super soft feel of Suri alpaca with a touch of wool and winding it around a strong nylon core, we have created an elegant alternative to mohair that causes zero discomfort. Sounds like a real dream to me!
