Q&A with Folktale Fibers!

Folktale Fibers will be bringing animal friendly handspun yarn and fibers to the Holiday Booty Market on December 6! Perfect for you knitters to knit some awesome gifts for your loved ones, or grab some lovely yarn for the knitters on your list!

In 25 words or less describe who you are and what you make.

I'm a spinster who loves taking raw, natural fibers and spinning them into magical & whimsical skeins of yarn, inspired by nature & fairytales.

What's your favorite thing you make?

My favorites change all the time (pretty much every time I make something new, it becomes my current favorite), but right now my favorite yarns to spin are my "leafy" yarns, which have handmade & hand embroidered felt leaves spun in.

Tell us about a crafting disaster/accident.

I thought about my answer to this one for a while, but I honestly can't think of any "disasters" or accidents that didn't turn out just fine it the end. Fiber arts tend to be pretty forgiving, so any accidents usually turn into happy mistakes or fun discoveries. All my accident stories would go something like, "this one time I mixed up the wrong dye colors by mistake and didn't find out until I poured it on the fiber, but it actually looked better than the colors I was originally going to use anyway." Although, having said that, I'm now crossing my fingers that I don't somehow set some wool on fire tonight or something.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

The overall coziness and warmth, the sharing, and the food. And the craft shows!

Who at the Booty Market are you excited to see/shop?

Well, I'm not sure who all is going to be there yet, but I'm hoping 8th Street Soap Kitchen will be, because I love handmade soap and I just spent twenty minutes reading the awesome soap descriptions on their website.

Q&A with Kelly Rand!

Kelly Rand is a writer for DCist.com and Crafting a Green World and an all-around awesome gal. Come shop her rad stuff at the Holiday Booty Market on December 6!

In 25 words or less describe who you are and what you make.

I am a writer and compulsive knitter. I create modern handmade items with a twist of irony. You can read about my life and craft at kellyrand.com

What's your favorite thing you make?

Currently it's my gun cozy, but soon to be taken over by another project, equally as dark.

Tell us about a crafting disaster/accident.

After learning about the horrors of vinyl, I set out to find a waterproofing method. I used linseed oil and coated some old canvas. I'm a very impatient person and proclaimed the method unsuccessful when after about a month, the canvases still had not dried.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

Decorating the house with festive decorations and telling stories of Christmas tree ornaments as they go up on the tree.

Who at the Booty Market are you excited to see/shop?

Fisticuffs!

Q&A with bLuGrn design!

bLuGrn design will be at the Holiday Booty Market on December 6 with all kinds of goodies for you to buy!

In 25 words or less describe who you are and what you make.

I'm an architect in training that loves to make and make and make. From sterling and goldfill jewelry made up of shark teeth fossils, braille pendants and bird silhouettes, to paper goods and puppy themed onsies. I've got a bit of A.D.D. When it comes to choosing my craft I guess.

What's your favorite thing you make?

I really enjoy making the shark teeth jewelry. It requires me to make frequent trips to the chesapeak bay and sift through the sand looking for the miocene era shark teeth that have eroded from the cliffs. It's completely relaxing and sort of like treasure hunting.

Tell us about a crafting disaster/accident.

I have so many... Mostly causing physical harm to myself. I've had pieces of metal lodged in my eye.. Cut my fingers all the time... And even burned my face with some hot pliers after soldering a piece... I'm a bit accident prone.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

shopping for presents

Who at the Booty Market are you excited to see/shop?

Pretty much everyone! I'm hoping to get all my christmas shopping done there!

Q&A with Tigerflight!

We heart Tigerflight and her awesome world of plush personalities. Check her out at our market tomorrow!

In 25 words or less describe who you are and what you make.

I create an army of ill-mannered characters but also turn old clothing into cool, art pillows in the form of owls.

What's your favorite thing you make?

I really do enjoy making the owls, especially watching the different personalities develop with the different placements of the eyes and beaks. it's bizzare and cool. one ended up looking just like my grampa so I kept him for my own.

Tell us about a crafting disaster/accident.

Aside from the room where I work? That's a disaster! Seriously tho, after the Rock and Shop at the Black Cat last year, I had a small dolly lose a wheel in the alley behind the Black Cat and it had been raining and I lost about 4 ghosts (white, naturally) into a dirty rain puddle. Magically John Davis of Fisticuffs came to my rescue and even gave (GAVE!) me a dolly. He is still one of my favorite people/all out heros.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

I'm a complete nerd for christmas lights...other peoples. And trees. And vintage decorations. And mulled wine. And cookies. I'm hoping to actually make it to Hampden in Baltimore to gawk at the christmas lights. I hear it's spectacular and I am always too busy to go. But this year I'm making an effort. Seriously.

Who at the Booty Market are you excited to see/shop?

Everyone! I can't believe the talent we have! DeNada's bags are awesome, I'm looking forward to adding more Block Party rings to my jewelry box, i'm always happy to see john davis work and tina's cards. And this year, I am DEFINTITELY getting a cat head scarf for my mom from Daisy Lacey. Man, I'm going to spend so much money, huh?

Q&A with 60bugs!

If you are a rad kid in D.C., it is likely that you are wearing something by 60 bugs. Debbie of 60 bugs loves the 80s, music, pop culture and DIYing, and likes to incorporate these themes into her embroidery and gocco printing. Check out her stuff tomorrow at the 3rd Annual Holiday Booty Market.

In 25 words or less describe who you are and what you make.

I am Debbie of 60bugs and I hand-stitch and hand-print fun and funny designs on things like baby onesies and accessories, t shirts and reusable coffee sleeves. I'm a bit of a nerd.

What's your favorite thing you make?

I'm really digging the hand-stitched and hand-printed reusable coffee sleeves right now ... people seem to like them and wool felt is so awesome to work with. Cozy!

Tell us about a crafting disaster/accident.

I've had quite a few disasters, most involving my inability to measure anything the proper way. I've convinced myself that I can "eyeball it" which tends to only be true about 75% of the time.

What's your favorite thing about the holidays?

Now that I have kids, it all seems so much more magical. I'm a sucker for all of it, really ... the cheesy music, the gift shopping, the decorations. If it snowed I would be deliriously happy!

Who at the Booty Market are you excited to see/shop?

I am in awe of the awesomeness that is going to be at the market! Everyone is amazing, but I'm really excited to see my pal Kim's [of Kitten Rocks Well] fabric envelopes! So cute!
