Butt Welding and Computer Numerical Control Processes

metalwork

When people mention high pressure fittings, the heads of some individuals go towards the realm of corsets.

Well, not all such fittings come with trimmings of velvet and lace — some are firmly tethered to the domains of steel piping, high temperatures, and welding. For the uninitiated and pressed for a working definition of the welding process, it might be sufficient to say that it is the joining of metals (usually) or thermoplastics (increasingly) by way of coalescence, and that it is achieved via the studied formation of joints through melted work pieces and material filling.

Butt welding, or the making of a butt weld, is known for its difficulty of execution. In AudenlHVAC Fundamentals: Volume 2, James E.

Brumbaugh outlines the eight steps of butt welding.

In a paraphrase of Brumbaugh, the eight steps of butt welding are: (1) properly machining pipe ends in preparation for the butt-welding joint (2) cleaning pipe ends, joints and sockets by removing grease and other foreign materials (3) aligning and affixing the weld in place (4) before the application of heat, checking that the valve is in the open position, that the valve bonnet is “hand-tight,” and that any nonmetallic discs have been removed (5) ensuring proper support of pipe during welding and eliminating extraneous straining during cooling (6) preheating the welding area to a temperature between 400°F and 500°F (7) proceeding through the requisite two to four passes that will complete the process (8) removing discoloration with a cloth and brush.

Although the above describes a standard procedure, not everyone employs it. Today, in parts production there is increased use in the application of computer numerical control, otherwise known as CNC machining equipment. This technology has been around for nearly seventy years and comprises machine-tool automation. Newer iterations of the technology, naturally, no longer make much use punched tape. Today, CNC methods are favored because of their capacity for repeatability and the refined quality that it imparts to its production output.

Welders who known their industry are usually knowledgeable about both methods. What are your preferences when it comes to butt and pipe welding?

Metal Fabrication Welding for Pivotal Aerospace Tooling Industry

metalwork

Metal fabrication welding is one of the integral steps in the making of metal components and parts. It is the process in metal working where two or more metal parts are joined together to get the desired results. The welded components and parts hence derived are used in a wide range of industry sectors that make use of fabricated metal products. Due to space constraints, in this article, I would stick to the use of welding in the pivotal aerospace tooling industry.

Welding Essentials

For offering the best in metal fabrication welding in the important aviation industry, you should make sure that you have the right experts. They should have the required expertise to analyze electro-hydraulics, programmable logic controls and motion control for unique tolerance requirements. You should also be well equipped to provide crucial aviation tooling under tight deadlines, if the need arises.

You should have different facilities so that you can carry on your unhampered even when one mechanical production unit closes down. To fulfill all these, you should be armed with a team of dedicated experts in mechanics, electro-hydraulics, programmable logic controls and motion controls.

Aerospace Tooling Process

The entire welding of metal for aerospace industry starts with proper analysis of the manufacturing needs. A competent team would then integrate the entire findings to offer you turnkey solutions (design, build, install and fine tune) that exactly suit your needs. For user friendly operations, a good metal fabricator should train the operators in proper handling of the products. A proper metal fabrication welding process for the aerospace sector include having a facility that use composite component fabrication and assembly line jigs in sizes that range from table top to a complete system.

Aerospace Tooling Products

Among the most required tooling parts and components required in the aerospace industry are mandrels and forming equipment for composite molds on many types of aircraft.

Apart from that, you can also get testing fixtures and assembly tooling and fixtures for many types of aircraft. Other composites offered through metal welding are exhaust housing for helicopters to build a composite LM (lay-up mandrel). A competent metal fabricator would also offer you reliable and cost effective way to cut slots in rock-hard graphite composite pads for the shuttle’s fuel tanks. Other aerospace products include support equipment for the new heavy lift rocket program and assembly pins. These are derived by heat treatment and high precision machining exclusively for Boeing Space and Defense. Other important tools include load testing fixture for Boeing, and lift fitting for the high strength and precision required in the assembly of an aircraft fuselage and many more.

Now, that you know all about the finer nuances of metal fabrication welding, it would be much easier for you to engage one for your purpose. These tips are especially useful if you are dealing with the aerospace tooling industry.

Metalwork: Making Cold Connections with Rivets

Metalwork: Making Cold Connections with Rivets is a one hour DVD produced by Interweave and hosted by metalsmith artist Susan Lenart Kazmer. In this DVD, Kazmer demonstrates three standard riveting techniques and uses these in two jewelry projects. For those who aren’t interested in torch work but want to learn how to connect metal to metal, cold connections is a wonderful alternative that can add a lot of character and dimension to your jewelry designs.
Techniques
The three riveting techniques demonstrated on the DVD include wire riveting, screw riveting, and tube riveting. Susan Lenart Kazmer shows each one and explains the use of specific tools, such as a jeweler’s saw, flex shaft, and files, as she works through each method. All of these techniques use standard fabrication practices, but there is no need to use a torch.

While I didn’t find any of the methods she showed necessarily difficult as far as understanding how to do them, I can see that it would take practice. Kazmer warns about this, but also explains that like anything else in jewelry making, you will become more proficient with enough practice. Holes must be drilled through the metal and match up to each other so that you can insert wire and connect them together. Using the hammer to spread the ends of wire sections to create a kind of nail head is another part of the techniques she illustrated that would take some time to master.
Projects
While showing the three techniques, Kazmer shows how you can use these two make two different types of pendants. One pendant is primarily put together using the wire riveting technique and includes a colorful scrap of paper covered with mica between the two sections of metal. The other pendent uses screw and tube rivets to create a dimensional pendant and bail.

She also shows a number of other pieces she has made using these methods so that you can get an understanding of the possibilities available.

6 Common Categories of Lathes

metalwork

Common categories of lathes include: woodworking lathes, metalworking lathes, glassworking lathes, metal spinning lathes, ornamental turning lathes, and reducing lathes.

Lathes are essential machines for woodturning, metal working, glassworking, and metal spinning. Many items made from metal can be transformed into useful objects by the use of a lathe. Operations like cutting, sanding, drilling, and knurling are made easier through the use of lathes. Here is more about the major categories of lathes.

Woodworking lathes

The oldest type of lathe is the woodworking lathe. Derived from it are the other types of lathes that we use today. The shaping of the tools is achieved by using an adjustable metal rail, a tool rest, and the operator. Sandpaper may be pressed against the spinning object to achieve a smooth surface. Other models are used for making bowls and plates which have no horizontal metal rail.

Metalworking lathes

]]>

Using a hardened cutting tool, metal is shaved from the workpiece in a metalworking lathe. The cutting tool is fastened securely to a solid movable mounting which in turn is maneuvered using handwheels or computer controls. The metalworking lathes are perhaps the most widely-known. However, material properties may be altered. Mechanical effects such as microcracks, work hardening, and residual stress may be noted.

Glassworking lathes

This type of lathe is quite similar to the other lathes in terms of design with a main difference only on how the work piece is transformed. The glassworking lathes uses a varied temperature flame in which a hollow glass vessel is rotated over. The flame is used to mold the softened glass which in turn is formed by glassblowing or by deformation. The lathes have two headstocks with chucks that are arranged to spin in synchronicity.

Metal spinning lathes

Operating a metal spinning lathes is as simple as the woodturning counterparts. This type of lathe would need a user-supplied rotationally symmetric mandrel, which is most often made from wood, to be used as a template. Metal spinning is not as common as it was before, but can still be handy for producing small batches.

Ornamental turning lathes

Ornamental turning lathes were developed to make decorative objects. These lathes may use horizontal and vertical cutting frames, elliptical chicks, and eccentric chucks. The cutting is usually done by a rotating cutter rather than having the object rotated.

Reducing lathes

This specialized lathe has features which integrate a mechanism similar to a pantograph. These lathes are used in coin-making wherein the plaster original is duplicated and then reduced.

More or less, the different categories are related with one another. The major differences are on the accessories.

How To Choose The Right Celtic Wedding Ring

metalwork

So the happy time has come for you to choose your wedding ring!

Celtic metalwork has a long and distinguished tradition. By choosing a Celtic wedding ring you are benefiting from centuries of skill and craftsmanship. This article aims to give you some insight into the process of selecting the perfect ring – a ring that you will wear with pride for life!

The first thing to be aware of is wide variety of styles available, each respecting and celebrating the proud traditions of Celtic art, metalwork and jewelry design.

Claddagh rings feature the centuries-old claddagh design – two hands, holding a heart, topped by a royal crown. These elements are said to represent friendship, love and loyalty. The traditional claddagh ring was originally exchanged in Galway as a token of marriage, which makes it a natural choice for your wedding day.

]]>

Trinity knot and Celtic knot wedding rings feature Celtic knot, Celtic weave and interlace patterns – from simple, elegant weaves to beautiful, intricate designs. Celtic knots are a key feature of Celtic art and design, from pre-Christian times right through to the modern era.

Celtic warrior wedding rings feature designs based on the fabulous Ardagh Chalice, the finest example of Celtic metalwork yet discovered in Ireland.

You will also find rings inspired by Ireland’s rich cultural heritage, including the Book of Kells, the standing stone Celtic Crosses and the ancient burial site, Newgrange.

Meanwhile, a range of rings has been designed featuring inscriptions in Gaelic, the modern Celtic language of Ireland.

The styles described above are available in a wide range of metals. If you (or your fiancé) has a yellow gold engagement ring you will most likely be looking for a yellow gold ring to match. However, if the engagement ring is of a white metal – white gold or platinum for example – you may choose from a range of white rings including white gold, platinum and palladium. Finally, if you are looking for a real ‘standout’ ring you will find that designs are available in a two-tone combination of ‘traditional’ yellow and ‘classic’ white gold.

As you can see, jewelers in Ireland and abroad have worked tirelessly and creatively to preserve and renew the traditions of Celtic metalwork. Now it’s your turn to find the celtic wedding ring that inspires you!

Everything is everything. Time to move on to something else until more stuff arrives for the Corsair 800D project. Stay tuned for some MDPC-X style sleeving, CyberDruid style lighting tricks and who knows…

Gods End Of Term Report

metalwork

End of Term Report.

Surname: Almighty

Christian Name: God

Subjects Taken:

Mathematics: Absolute genius in this subject but he has lost marks for failing to show the working out.

Languages: He has made a complete and utter mess of this subject inventing far too many obscure and unnecessary tongues like French. English would have been adequate for all the world and he could have omitted all those needless swear words.

Science: God has really excelled in the sciences but once again he has failed to show the working out.

Art: Another subject which God has mastered. His rainforests and mountain ranges are outstanding, as are his female nudes. Although, some of his portraits need reworking, Margaret Thatcher is a case in point.

Metalwork: God has created a wide and varied range of metals although Uranium was possibly a mistake.

Geography: God has not quite come to grips with this subject. Landmasses have been placed rather haphazardly and people have been placed with scant regard to the consequences. Putting Germany in central Europe for example.

Woodwork: Again God has demonstrated his flexibility in working with wood. A good range of both hardwood and softwood. Pity he then went on to create the woodworm, death-watch beetle and the termite.

Religious Instruction: God has been bit one sided in this subject. It seems to be all about him.

Overall: God tries very hard to be the best. He is eager to please and likes being the centre of attention. He has a tendency to overreact and become destructive if he feels he is being ignored.

I feel he rushed this terms assignment of designing and building a world in seven days in order to give himself a day off. His overuse of salt water tends to bear this out. He spent far too long on frivolous intricacies such as spider webs, snowflakes and French people.

Creating two sexes was a master-stroke providing not only for a means of self sustaining procreation but also a nice bit of rumpy-pumpy at the weekend. Thus giving his creations something to be truly thankful for just in time for that day of worship to himself.

He has managed to inject into his project his unique quirky sense of humour by giving us the Platypus, Archaeopteryx and Gerald Ford.

Attendance: Good overall but is often missing when needed most.
