Type of paper: medium heavy matte finish — From the original description:
In the extreme north the first basin is that of Ibarra, so named from the town which occupies its centre at a height of 7,300 feet, and which stands on an affluent of the Mira, the frontier river towards Colombia. West of this basin a distinct range is formed by Cotocachi (“Salt Mountain “), Yana-Urcu (“Black Mountain “), and other volcanoes, while eastwards rises gloomy Imbabura, its black sharp-pointed crater standing out in almost solitary grandeur against the blue sky.

All the northern towns of Ecuador are comprised within the limits of the plateaux, which form a southern continuation of the Pasto uplands. Tulcan, guardian of the frontier near the Colombian Ipiales, owes its importance to its trade with the neighbouring republic. In this respect it serves as the depot of the larger city of Ibarra, founded at the end of the sixteenth century on a plain whose waters flow northwards to the Rios Chota and Mira. The climate of Ibarra is much milder than that of Tulcan, thanks to its considerably lower altitude (13,200 and 15,830 feet respectively). Ibarra lies in the heart of the historical region, and near it is shown the site of the ancient Camnqui, where stood a temple of the sun and a convent of vestals, and where was born Atahuallpa, done to death by Pizarro.

Bethlehem Holy Land Olive Wood Religious Gift Ideas

wood engraving

Religious gifts have a way or touching a loved ones heart in a way that no other gift can replicate.  The big question is just how you go about choosing a gift.  The persons’ religious background and upbringing is of the utmost importance.  The wrong gift could actually cause more harm than good.  If you know the persons religious beliefs, then you are at a good starting point.  Most religions relate back to the life of Christ and for all practical purposes can be a basis for determining your gift idea.  When in doubt, don’t try to second guess; instead, look into more generic forms such as perhaps angels, cherubs, or even a pretty picture with a well thought out saying.

In this article, I am going to concentrate on religious gift ideas based on the life of Christ and the biblical aspirations it brings forth.  Using the bible as a basis, you find that there are numerous subjects covering happiness, sadness, suffering and pain, hope and charity, and so many more.  Almost any occasion that you can think of has religious connotations.  You can formulate your ideas from scenes of the birth of Jesus all the way to his death on the cross.  You can also go back much further to the stories from the Old Testament.  A large majority of the population can relate their personal everyday decisions on the stories from the bible and we can use this relationship when searching for gift giving ideas.

]]>

A good place to start is by observing what other people have done in their own homes.  Upon entering a friend’s home, you may see a crucifix hanging above the door frame or a picture of the last supper picture hanging in the dining area.  Bedroom night stands and dressers may have religious articles on them.  Even take a look at what people wear.  Jewelry in the form of a cross may be seen worn as a necklace.  A religious scene may be on a pin or pendant.  Very popular today are religious scenes, sayings and clipart worn as tattoos.  Could you help someone decide on a scene?  Take a look in their garden; you are likely to see statues of angels or saints strategically placed along the walkways giving a feeling of warmth, peace and tranquility.  The list goes on and on, but the most important idea is to observe.

My favorite religious gift ideas come from items made of genuine Bethlehem olive wood imported from the Holy Land.  This olive wood comes from Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Nazareth, the area in which Christ had lived and preached the word of God to the people.  The wood is never harvested by killing live trees, which is almost unheard of today.  It is only taken from branches cut for pruning maintenance or from trees that died due to old age or disease.  Some of the wood may even be hundreds or thousands of years old.  Suppliers of the olive wood certify in writing that the wood is from the Holy Land and that it was cut only from dead or dying limbs.  What a wonderful idea to know the origin of the gift and the story behind it.

Craftsmen use this olive wood to create all types of religious items.  It could be something as simple as a cross with a leather strap for hanging around your neck to an elaborate hand carved statue for your bedroom dresser.  These craftsmen never stop generating new ideas.  Some of the hand carved items can be quite expensive.  Others are laser engraved and cut to form exotic shapes with very detailed images.  Some people wish to personalize the gifts with their own selected images and sayings adding a special personalized touch to the gift.  It is unlikely that you will find hand carved or engraved gifts in your local gift shop which can be personalized, but you can easily find them on the internet by searching for “engraved olive wood religious items.”  This type of religious gift is becoming more popular everyday.

In wrapping it up, get to know the gift recipients’ background, unless the gift is for yourself.  Choose a gift with a background story.  Not only will you be giving a gift, but you will be giving a story that keeps on telling.

The author’s website has examples of just such gifts.  Take a look at the true beauty of these gifts and let your mind start to wander.

Indian Wood Work: The Traditional Art

wood engraving

India is known for its amazingly beautiful handicraft of wood carving. Being influenced by the diverse cultures and flavors in India, the designs and carvings too can be found in an array of different forms and types. Indian wood craft generally carries motifs which showcase the different culture and flora fauna of a particular region.

The entire process of carving a piece of wood involves dedicated and well calculated strokes for chipping, carving and rounding the wooden surface. Skilled Indian artisans craft out exquisite pieces of traditional as well as contemporary designs on various wood items. There are lots of reasons which support the existence and popularity of Indian wood work such as- availability of different types of wood, availability of skilled labor, presence of rich cultural traditions and values to inspire the wood art. The major wood carving styles which are followed by the Indian artisans are:

Lattice work is identified for its see through cut work. It basically involves carving on screens with exquisite see through cut work.

The undercut carving is derived from the traditional stone carving which is used for making sculptures. This kind of carving often incorporates seven different layers in the making. Undercut carving is generally done on panels.

Deep carving refers to the particular style of wood art where the carving results into raised designs patterns. This particular carving is often used while designing antique wood furniture.

Engraved carving is done on thin panels running along the hem of the surface, with a motif in the very center. This is the characteristic feature of engraved carving.

In this particular form of carving flat surface is used to carve out the desired design. It is rather the simplest form of wood carving amongst all kinds of wood carving. To know more about wood work in India, click here.

CNC Wood Router

wood engraving

A CNC wood router is a Numerical control tool that creates objects from wood. Parts of a project can be made and then assembled using a router to produce a complete project.

The CNC router works like a printer. Work is composed on a computer and then the design or drawing is sent to the CNC router for the hard copy. This outputs a 3-dimensional copy of the work. The CNC router uses a cutting tool instead of an ink jet.

The cutting tool is generally a router but other cutters can be used as well.

The CNC works on the Cartesian coordinate system (X, Y, Z) for 3D motion control. CNC stands for computer numerically controlled cutting tool. This gives the computer a printer like ability to drive a CNC machine to make parts.

For engraving and general purpose cutting all that is needed is some material to engrave or cut on and an engraving or cutting tool bit.

A file of a picture or part has to be converted to g-code. Clamp the work piece down and then use the driver program to zero the CNC and run the g-code file. This will command the CNC to make the desired parts for you, quickly and accurately. Use it for all kinds of projects to make PCBs, gears, molds, etc.

The CNC Router is great for hobbies, engineering prototyping, product development, art, robotic education, and production work.

A CNC wood router uses CNC (computer numerical control) and is similar to a metal CNC mill with the following differences:

àThe wood router typically spins faster — with a range of 13,000 to 24,000 RPM

àLow end hobby grade machines typically uses smaller tools — typical shank size 20 mm or at most 25 mm. Professional quality machines frequently use surface facing tools up to 3″ in diameter or more, and spindle power exceeding 15 horsepower. Machines capable of routing heavy material at many hundreds of inches per minute are common.

àSome machines use smaller toolholders MK2 (Morse taper #2 – on older machines), ISO-30, HSK-63 or the tools just get held in a collet tool holder affixed directly to the spindle nose. ISO-30 and HSK-63 are rapid-change toolholding systems. HSK-63 has begun to supplant the ISO-30 as the rapid change standard in recent years.

A wood router is controlled in the same way as a metal mill, but there is a lot of CAM and CAD software like Artcam, Mastercam, Bobcad, and Featurecam specifically for wood routers.

Wood with different grain must be approached with unique strategies, and wood CAM software is less likely to need to have hog-out strategies than the metal ones. Wood routers are frequently used to machine other soft materials such as plastics at high speed.

Typical three-axis CNC wood routers are generally much bigger than their metal shop counterparts. 5′ x 5′, 4′ x 8′, and 5′ x 10′ are typical bed sizes for wood routers. But can be built to accommodate very large sizes up to, but not limited to 12′ x 100′. Most table routers use a three motor drive system (xyz) utilizing either servo or stepper motors that drive the router motor via a gantry system. The gantry system isolates the XYZ movement in the top part of the machine with a stationary table holding the workpiece. Many CNC metal mills have the cutter motor moving on the Z axis, and a table which moves in X and Y for added stability.

Many wood routers can run at machining speeds of 25 metres/min (linear) or faster with a few machines such as the Anderson capable of 40 metres/min, Onsrud capable of 86 metres/min.
