The Quilt Shows the Love

quilting

“Love” is alone word, so it is need two people to warm it. She was an outstanding girl, a lot of success men want to marry with her. But finally she had chosen him. At that time, he had nothing to make her comfortable, and worked in a factory. She lost her family because of him. They borrowed a storehouse from their friends as their bedroom. The cold storehouse liked an icehouse, she always weaken up because of there was no warm quilt to warm her.

One day, she came back with pale face. He asked:” what’s wrong with you?” “I’m just a little tired.” Then she took out the money from the pocket:” look, we have money now. We can buy a quilt now.” he surprised:” how can you get these money:” she smiled to him:” I help people to send the advertizing paper.” At that time, they owed the quilt to warm themselves at cold day.

A few years past, he had his company.

They never liked the poverty-stricken day, she moved into a perfect house. All the things were thrown out expect the old quilt. They used it for many years, so she persisted to leave it. One day he came back with a new quilt, and asked her to change a new one. She had no idea to refuse, so she changed the quilt. But she not comfortably fell asleep like before without that old quilt. She said to herself:” how important the quilt to me. At that time, I didn’t send to the paper, I sold my blood.” She felt he never loved her than before.

One day, he forgot to turn off the computer.

He opened the blog and persisted to write dairy. One of the dairy said:” at that day, when she came back with a pale face I freak out. She told me that she earned money to send to the paper. But at night, I found that the pinhole left her arm. I knew that she must sell the blood. So I swear to myself that I need to give her the happiness. Now I did. Yesterday, I donate the blood at hospital. I just want to experience the feeling what she felt. Then I took the money to buy the quilt. Her eyes wetted.

The Baby Shower Gift Dilemma – Create a Handmade Quilt

quilting

Have you been searching for just the right baby shower gift for your best friend, your sister, or maybe even a colleague from the office?  No matter where you have looked, the idea of finding another outfit that the new baby will outgrow in weeks, or another pile of odds-and –ends from diapers to rattles is just not what you had in mind for a useful and meaningful baby shower gift, then this article is for you.   Create a handmade baby crib quilt that will amaze the new mother-to-be and all of the guests at the baby shower.

You don’t have to be an expert quilter to make a special handmade baby crib quilt.  First, you need to choose the perfect fabric for the baby crib quilt.  If you’re unsure of what design you might prefer, either take a trip to your local fabric store, or go on line to the one of the many retail dealers for their collections of ideas and baby crib quilt patterns.  If this is your first attempt at the art of quilting, it is best to keep your pattern simple. Choose colors that are appropriate for the baby’s gender, unless you do not know that, than yellow or white is a safe choice.  Be sure you wash and lightly iron all fabrics before you start to cut.

There are many sewing tips that quilting experts would pass on to a novice, who may just be starting out, possibly making their first quilt.  Here are some important quilting tips:  Sew seams carefully, so that you match each corner and every triangle tip is pointy.  You can save time and increase accuracy by chain sewing your pieces together.   Your piecing will improve if you take the time to press your quilt blocks as you make them.  Pressing is an extra step in the quilt making process , but one that will payoff  when your block fit together, nest, just like they should.  Make sure that you are sewing an accurate quarter inch seam allowance for your quilt blocks.   If this allowance is not precise, when it is time to sew the blocks together, they will not align properly.   Set your sewing machine to the standard seam allowance used for quilts, which is an exact quarter inch seam.  One way to improve a block that is either too large or too small is to use the freezer paper method and square up the block before sewing it together.   Gridded freezer paper makes the job easier, but the plain freezer paper will work to help make the block more even.

]]>

At this point you are ready to either hand quilt or machine quilt your baby shower gift.  Place the backing fabric right side down on the floor or large clean area. Put the batting down next. Place the pieced quilt on top of the batting right side up. Pin the fabrics and batting together starting from the center and working out.  I recommend that you stretch all three layers before pinning. Using an old table and some large butterfly clamps, stretch your blanket securely in place to the table before you pin the layers together. Also there are curved quilting pins available at the quilt shops that will make the pinning task easier to complete, due to the shape of the pin. They are rounded at the bottom and perfect for the task.

You can either hand quilt or machine quilt your baby shower gift. Following the perimeter of the shape or you can choose to use a quilter’s pencil and template and draw a design and quilt the design.    Either way, you will be stitching through all three layers, which not only fasten the layers together, but create a design, as you quilt.

Your baby shower gift will be complete when the edges are finished and the binding is sewn in place. Of the two types of bindings, crosswise grain and bias,  the former is a good choice because there is less risk that a split would damage the entire side of the quilt.  Crosswise strips also stretch well enough to curve when needed along the outer edge of the quilt.

Your search and dilemma is now over.  You have the perfect shower gift, a handmade baby crib quilt, which is the perfect baby shower gift for that new mother-to-be, created by you.

Take time to quilt.

How to Make a Quilt – The Initial Steps

quilting

Quilt making is a fine art which if learnt and practiced properly could be developed into a rewarding profession. Passion has to be the underlying factor in mastering this art form. A distinguishing feature of quilt making is that the finished product is not only an artwork but an item to share with family and friends. Some quilts are so remarkable that they are preserved as prized possessions for generations.

Quilt making is learnt at a basic level such that it could be woven in home. For commercial purposes machine weaving might be mastered at an advanced level. To get started it is advisable to learn this art in its basic form. Certain well directed steps are to be followed in sequence to learn quilt making.

Ideas for Designing a Quilt – You must have a clear idea about the purpose of the quilt being made. A quilt is designed according to its use: a wall hanging, bed quilt, rug, or pillow cover. A wall hanging quilt should be visually appealing as compared to a bed quilt. Bed quilt for a baby’s room should ideally be of a cool blue shade or warm yellow shade. Quilt styling that involves selecting among embroidery, patchwork, or appliqué is another vital aspect in its designing.

]]>

Patchwork styled quilt is the simplest with small fabric pieces joined together. These patches might be joined in order or in abstract pattern. Though it is the most elementary of designs, even experienced quilt makers choose this style. After having mastered the art of patchwork, appliqué might be attempted. This is a specialized pattern involving stitching of cut out fabrics upon fabrics. Both patchwork and appliqué might be complemented with embroidery in designing a quilt. For embroidery work coloured threads, metallic threads, silk, cotton, and embroidery floss are used. Designs in embroidery are most painstaking and done by master weavers. The most remarkable quilt designs are in embroidery and are often kept as heirlooms within a family.

Choosing fabric and colour of lining – After having decided on the quilt pattern or style the proper fabric is to be chosen. Apart from the material, colour of fabric is also important. Warm shades like yellow, orange, red and purple represent action and alertness, while shades in green and blue indicate calmness and tranquillity. If the quilt is meant as a wall hanging a bright shade would be preferable, while for bedrooms a cool colour is better. Whatever the colour, the material must be colourfast. Before using it is to be washed to run colours if any.

The fabric used for making quilt should neither be too light nor too heavy. Light materials like organza are too loose to weave a quilt and the end-product is feeble. Contrarily, heavy fabrics like canvas and denim are too tough to sew a quilt. Ideally colour fast cotton should be used in making quilts.

Designing and Cutting of Templates – After selecting your design and fabric it is necessary to have templates patterned. For regular patterns like squares or triangles a rotary cutter would serve the purpose. However for more complicated forms in patchwork or appliqué use of templates makes the task convenient.

Subsequently, marking your fabric, assembly, and sewing are the steps that follow in order to get your quilt completed.

How to Quilt for Beginners

quilting

Article by Maybelle Maddison

Quilting is making a comeback and for good reason. People want something that is homemade in our technology-driven society. But what is quilting and how do you know if this is right for you? This article will take you through the basic steps of quilting.

Before you get start quilting, you may want to delve deeply into why you are considering this hobby. For some, quilting reminds them of their grandmothers. For others, they may have seen an a documentary on television. You may even want to quilt a gift for a special occasion. Whatever your reason, you need to know what it is or you will be in danger of stopping.

Now that you know why you want to quilt, let’s talk about what quilt is. A quilt is nothing but a sandwich. The top slice is the quilt top. The quilt top is the beautiful design that probably caught your eye. When folks talk about quilt pattern, they mean the quilt top.

The meat or the stuffing of the quilt is the batting. The batting is what will keep the quilt warm.

The bottom slice of bread is the backing. The backing may not get much attention, but it is a very important part of the quilt. This is what will be touching the person who you give the quilt to. Also, this is where you will attach your label.

Quilting is simply stitching these three layers – quilt top, batting and backing – together. The fun part is that each of these layers can be customized to express your creativity. The quilt top patterns have different names and they mean different things, too.

The selection of the batting is also very important. If the quilt is for someone in a cold climate, you could have a wool batting. (In that case you would want to note care instructions on the quilt’s label.) If the quilt will be heavily used in the summer, a thin batting would do.

The backing is not to be left out when it comes to expressing yourself. You could incorporate left over blocks from the quilt top in the backing. If you want to use a mock binding (a technique that uses part of the backing to bind the quilt), make sure that the backing will match the quilt top.

If you really want to make a quilt special, however, it is all in the label. The label will give the date the quilt was finished, the occasion, the quilter and the recipient. With technology, you could even include a poem or a special quote on the label.

The wonderful thing about quilting is that at each step of the process you have so many choices, so many ways to personalize this blanket of love in a world of technology. It really is simple when it gets to the basics, but so heartfelt.

So, if you have even thought of quilting, give it a try. You will be glad that you did.

What Is Patchwork Quilting?

The definition from a dictionary for patchwork quilting is ‘a quilt made by sewing patches of different materials together’. There are three layers of fabric and these three layers are stitched together to make the patchwork quilt. Everything You Need to Know About Caring for Your Amish Quilt

Knowing how to properly care for your quilt will ensure its longevity.  Amish quilts generally take approximately 400 hours for an Amish quilter to complete.  Considering how much time it took to make your quilt, we know you will want to handle it with care. Here are some helpful hints that we received directly from Barbara, an Amish quilt designer from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

To clean your quilt, we recommend two solutions:

Barbara said this is what she does to clean her quilts. Soak your quilt in cold water in either a bathtub or washer machine. Add 2 quarts of apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of mild soap (like MelaPower), and a 1/2 cup of table salt. Do not use bleach. If you use your bathtub, let your quilt soak for 1 hour. If you use your washing machine, put your quilt on your Gentle cycle. After your quilt has been soaked or washed, hang dry it. Do not machine dry your quilt or use fabric softeners.

]]>

Amish quilts can be dry cleaned. Ask your dry cleaner if they have cleaned quilts or bed coverings in the past. Dry cleaning is recommended if your quilt has loose lace or puffy applique work because this material can be damaged in a machine wash. Dry cleaning is also recommended for fabrics that may run in water, such as fully saturated dark colored and hand-dyed fabrics. To determine if your fabric will run, rub it with a piece of cotton that has been moistened with very hot water. If color bleeds onto the cotton, do not wash your quilt – even in cold water. Instead, have your quilt professionally dry cleaned. After your quilt is dry cleaned, hang it outside to air it out.

For quilts that are used daily, we recommend that you clean them once a year.

Amish quilters use markings to guide them as they hand stitch a quilt. Often these lines are still noticeable when the quilt is complete. Amish quilters typically use either pencil or chalk. If the quilt markings are made in pencil, you can purchase an eraser from a fabric store. Do not use a regular pencil eraser; they have oil in them that will permanently mark your quilt. You can also use a clean toothbrush. Dip it in a mixture of warm water and mild liquid laundry soap (we recommend Woolite). Use the toothbrush to gently rub out the quilt markings. If the marking line is white, it is probably chalk and can be brushed off or easily removed with a damp cloth.

Direct sunlight is not good for your quilt. It will naturally cause your colors to fade and the fabric to weaken. To store your Amish quilt, we recommend that you use a pillowcase or sheet. Do not use a plastic bag. Keep your quilt somewhere dark and dry.

Judging the Quality of an Amish Quilt

quilting

Article by Michael Bell

The description “handmade” does not mean that an Amish quilt is high quality. Unfortunately many Amish quilts on the market today are mediocre. And buyer beware: some “Amish quilts” are not even made by the Amish, but are counterfeited in China and other Asian countries.

You should keep in mind that you cannot tell if a quilt is made by an Amish person just be looking at it, but you can tell if it is a quality quilt. The best way to ensure that you are buying an authentic Amish quilt is to buy your quilt directly from a reputable Amish shop or farm in places like Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where the Amish have settled, or through a reputable online distributer. Here are some surefire ways to identify a high quality quilt.

Design:

Designing a high quality quilt is not an easy task. There are many choices, such as patterns, fabrics, and proportions, and each has to be made with consideration for the other. Most quilters are actually better at sewing than they are at design. Look to see how well the fabrics of quilt work in combination. Stand about ten yards away from the quilt and see if the quilt looks consistent in color scheme, dimensions and pattern. From this vantage point, you will be able to notice if something in the quilt does not look right.

Alignment:

If you are evaluating a traditional patchwork quilt, look to see how well the piecing is aligned. Make sure that the corners of the blocks touch each other and are not off by more than an 1/8 of an inch. When misalignments occur, quilts can get puckers and wrinkles. Look for bulky areas from sloppy seam allowances.

Quilting Density:

The more quilting there is in a quilt, the better. The purpose of the quilting stitches is to hold the quilt sandwich together-the two outer layers and the middle batting. On average, in each square foot of a good quilt, there should be at least 90 linear inches of quilt stitching. Where one quilting pattern stops and another starts, the designer sometimes leaves small areas without any quilt stitching. Look to see if there are gaps in the quilting larger than a fist.

Quilting Stitches:

The quilting stitches in a high quality quilt will be the same size and evenly spaced. Look for about 6-8 stitches per inch. A high quality queen size quilt will have over 50,000 stitches. Uneven stitching is the mark of an inexperienced or sloppy quilter. The quality of the stitching is usually best seen on the back of the quilt.

Binding:

This is the edge of the quilt and the first place where a quilt will wear out. The binding should be neat and straight with the corners neatly stitched together. Beware of quilts that have curved edges. This indicates that the proportions of the quilt are not even.

Making a Mini Quilt – Great Fun

quilting

Many of us do not have time to make a large bed quilt or we have an interest in quilting but we are not quite sure if we would like to do a large project. The quilts that you would like to make today can be traditional or made with new modern twists.

I enjoy the mini quilt because I can make one quilt block, finish it and feel that I have accomplished a completed project. And ideas abound as to what you can do with that block. That is what makes it so interesting and exciting.

To get started I ordered a free quilting pattern to be sure that I could do it. Well, I did. And you will never guess what I did with the finished quilt block. I will let you know towards the end of the article.

Here are lessons that I learned or suggestions that I have to offer if you have never made a quilt block.

Understand the quilt pattern directions.
Cut accurately.
Label each piece.
Sew as directed and press seams.

Helpful hints:

Pin pieces together before stitching to be sure that the correct pieces are being joined.
Match your pieces with the diagram to be sure correct pieces are being attached.
Set aside the quilt templates that have been used. If an error is made it helps to have a point of reference.
Do one step at a time, do not jump ahead or you will think that you are short on your cut pieces.
With a mini quilt if you make an error, just cut another piece. It is easier and the piecing will be accurate.

Making a mini quilt or a one block designed quilt is like sewing a jigsaw puzzle together. If you enjoy puzzles you will enjoy learning how to quilt.

Here are some ideas for the center of a one block quilt:

Leave the center plain or if you wish insert an embroidery design or an applique.
Add ready made embellishments.
Add a photo.

This is what I did with my free quilt pattern:

I used a ready made five petal flower and attached four of these flowers as an applique arranging them in an attractive manner strategically on the quilt block. In the middle or each flower I stitched a pearl bead. I then traced one of these flowers and superimposed this quick handmade applique pattern throughout the quilt and outlined stitched these flowers for the quilting.

A cotton stablizer was used to insure stability for holding the appliques and the pearls. A backing was fastened.

After you make your first block you will have many other ideas as to how these blocks can be used.

My block was a gift fo my mother-in-law. I made a pattern with matching fabric and finished this mini quilt into a lingerie bag with a zippered closure.

The reason for the quilting is that she has given me yards of quilting fabrics. The mini quilt satisfied her with my sewing and quilting abilities and the unexpected lingerie bag idea was a wonderful practical gift for her.
